Half-Round Gutters for the Homes That Wore Them First

Half-round is the gutter most pre-war homes in eastern Pennsylvania were built with: a smooth U-shaped trough hung from external brackets, with round downspouts. If you own a stone farmhouse, a Victorian, or a rowhome in one of the older boroughs, K-style aluminum will drain the roof just fine — but it will never look like it belongs there. Half-round does.

Every job, guaranteed in writing

  • PA HIC-registered & fully insured
  • Seamless aluminum, fabricated on-site to the inch
  • Written price locked for 12 months
  • Spotless cleanup, finished-work photos texted to you
  • Lifetime workmanship warranty, transferable once

There's a practical case too. The smooth interior has no inside corners for debris to catch on, so half-round sheds leaves better and cleans easier than K-style. The tradeoff is capacity — a half-round carries less water than a K-style of the same width — so we usually spec 6" where a K-style home would take 5". We run it in aluminum for most homes and copper where the house calls for it, and if your home is a 1990s colonial where half-round would just be an upcharge, we'll tell you K-style is the right call.

What's included

  • 5" and 6" half-round profiles in aluminum or copper
  • Round downspouts, smooth or corrugated, matched to the gutter
  • External bracket or rod-style hangers — the correct period look
  • Sized for real capacity: usually 6" where K-style would take 5"
  • Haul-away of your old gutters and full site cleanup
  • Lifetime workmanship warranty — yours as long as you own the home, transferable once
Straight pricing

Aluminum half-round typically runs $12–$18 per linear foot installed — a step above K-style because the profile, brackets, and round downspouts all cost more. Copper half-round is quoted per job. If K-style is the smarter money for your home, we'll say so.

Common questions

What's the difference between half-round and K-style gutters?

Shape and mounting. K-style has a flat back that screws to the fascia and a decorative front that mimics crown molding — it's what almost every home built since the 1960s has. Half-round is a smooth, open U hung from visible brackets, the profile older homes were built with. K-style carries more water per inch of width and costs less; half-round looks right on period homes and sheds debris better because there are no interior corners to catch it.

Do half-round gutters work as well as K-style?

They drain just as well when sized correctly — that's the key phrase. A half-round holds less water than a K-style of the same width, so we typically install 6" half-round where a home would otherwise get 5" K-style. Sized right, you give up nothing in performance, and the smooth interior actually stays cleaner.

What do half-round gutters cost?

Aluminum half-round runs $12–$18 per linear foot installed in our area, versus $9–$14 for K-style — the profile, the brackets, and the round downspouts each add a bit. Copper half-round is a different tier entirely and gets quoted per job. We put the range in writing before any work is scheduled.

Should I do half-round in aluminum or copper?

Aluminum gets you the period-correct shape at a workable price, in colors that suit older trim. Copper is the fully authentic answer — it's what many of these homes originally had — and it outlasts everything, but it costs several times more. On a stone or brick home with slate or cedar above, copper earns its price. On most others, aluminum half-round captures the look for a fraction of it.

Can you match the original gutters on my old house?

Usually, yes. Half-round profiles are more standardized than people expect, and between 5" and 6" in aluminum or copper, with smooth or corrugated round downspouts, we can get very close to what the house wore originally. Bring us a photo of an original section if one survives and we'll tell you exactly what it is.

Do gutter guards fit half-round gutters?

Yes — micro-mesh guards are made for half-round profiles, and the smooth trough underneath actually clogs less to begin with. We quote guards for half-round per job since the brackets change how the mesh mounts.
