Are Gutter Guards Worth It? An Honest Breakdown

Gutter guards are worth it if you're currently paying to clean your gutters twice a year, if your home is under heavy tree cover, or if getting up a ladder isn't something you want to keep doing. If none of those apply, well-pitched seamless gutters cleaned once a year may be all you need. Here's how to tell.

The cost math

Professional cleaning runs roughly $120–$250 per visit. Two visits a year is $240–$500 annually. Micro-mesh guards run about $10–$18 per foot installed. On a typical home, that's a few thousand dollars that stops the cleaning bill entirely. Over four to six years, the guards come out ahead, and they keep paying after that.

Not all guards are equal

Skip the foam inserts and snap-in plastic screens from the hardware store, because they clog within a season and trap debris under the screen where you can't reach it. Stainless micro-mesh is the one to beat: the openings are smaller than a grain of sand, so leaves and pine needles slide off while water passes through. A properly fitted perforated aluminum screen is the honest step down — it won't stop grit or needles, but on an open lot it keeps the leaves out for noticeably less per foot.

When guards aren't the answer

• Your gutters are sagging or leaking: fix or replace those first; guards on bad gutters just hide the problem
• You have almost no tree cover and rarely clog
• Your roof pitch is very steep and sheds most debris on its own

If your gutters are sound, guards can go right on your existing system after a cleaning and re-pitch. If they're failing, it's usually worth doing seamless gutters and guards together.
