LeafGuard vs LeafFilter: What's Actually Different?

August 15, 2026 · 6 min read

These two get cross-shopped constantly because the names sound alike, but they're not competing versions of the same product — they're two entirely different approaches to keeping leaves out of gutters. Understanding that difference matters more than any brand comparison.

The fundamental difference

  • LeafGuard is a one-piece reverse-curve system: a seamless gutter and hood fabricated as a single unit. Water wraps around the curved hood into the gutter; debris is supposed to slide off the edge. Installing it means replacing your existing gutters entirely.
  • LeafFilter is a stainless micro-mesh screen installed on top of gutters — usually the ones you already have. Water passes through the fine mesh; essentially everything else stays out.

How they handle debris

Micro-mesh physically blocks nearly everything — leaves, pine needles, maple spinners, even shingle grit. Reverse-curve hoods shed large leaves well, but smaller debris can ride the water film around the curve and end up inside, and the open slot can invite wasps and birds in some settings.

How they handle heavy rain

This one matters in Pennsylvania. In intense downpours, water can overshoot a reverse-curve hood entirely — exactly the overflow you bought guards to prevent. Quality micro-mesh handles high flow well when it's sized and pitched correctly, which is an installation question more than a product question.

The cost models are different animals

Because LeafGuard replaces your whole gutter system, you're buying new gutters plus protection — reported projects commonly run well into the thousands. LeafFilter goes onto existing gutters, so the ticket is typically smaller but still carries a national brand's premium and in-home sales process. Neither publishes pricing; both are quoted by appointment.

Which approach fits Eastern PA homes

Our climate throws everything at a gutter: oak and maple canopies, pine needles, gully-washer summer storms, and freeze-thaw winters. For that mix, we come down firmly on the micro-mesh side — it blocks the small debris our trees actually drop and, properly installed, takes our heaviest rain. If your existing gutters are sound, guarding them costs a fraction of replacing them; if they're shot, a new seamless system with micro-mesh on top still prices transparently.

That's the honest comparison: LeafGuard is a premium way to buy new gutters with built-in shedding; LeafFilter is a premium way to buy good mesh. We install the same micro-mesh category at $10–$18 per foot, published on this site, on your gutters or ours — no appointment required to see a number.
