Fall Gutter Prep in Berks County: What to Do Before the Leaves Drop

September 22, 2026 · 6 min read

Every October we get calls from homeowners who had their gutters cleaned in September and can't understand why water is sheeting over the front edge by Halloween. The answer is timing. A fall cleaning done before the leaves finish dropping is a cleaning you pay for twice. Here's how the season actually plays out in Berks County, and the four things worth doing before the first hard freeze.

When Berks County leaves actually drop

Around Reading, Mohnton, and most of the county, maples start letting go in mid-October and are mostly bare by the first week of November. Oaks are the problem tree: they hang onto leaves into late November, and some (pin oaks especially) drop all winter. Black walnuts go early — late September — and their leaflets are small enough to wash into downspouts and pack them like a drain plug.

So the right window for the main fall cleaning in Berks is roughly November 10 through the first week of December — after the maples and most of the oaks are done, before the gutters freeze full. If your lot is ringed with oaks, aim later in that window, not earlier.

Why the timing matters more than the cleaning

Leaves that sit in a gutter over winter hold water. That water freezes, expands, and pries at seams, end caps, and hangers — spring "my gutter is leaking at the corner" calls are usually last November's leaves. A packed gutter is also a shelf for ice, and ice dams do their real damage under the shingles, not in the gutter. One properly timed cleaning prevents most of it; two badly timed ones don't.

The four things worth doing before the freeze

  • Clean after the last big drop, not before it. If you only pay for one cleaning a year, this is the one — hand-cleared gutters and flushed downspouts in mid-to-late November.
  • Watch one hard rain. Stand at a window during a storm and look for water jumping the gutter or a downspout running at a trickle while the gutter is full. Either one tells you where the problem is before winter locks it in.
  • Check the pitch at the corners. Standing water lines or tiger-striping on the gutter face mean a run has gone flat. Re-pitching is a repair visit, not a replacement, but it has to happen before the water in that low spot becomes a 40-pound ice block.
  • Make sure downspouts discharge away from the foundation. Frozen ground doesn't absorb anything; meltwater dumped at the wall in January finds the basement. An extension or splash block is a $10 fix in November and a wet-basement bill in February.

Should you just get guards instead?

If you're paying for cleanings twice a year and your lot has real tree cover, micro-mesh guards usually pay for themselves in 4-6 years and end the ladder routine. If your roofline has almost no trees within a hundred feet, guards matter less, and we'll tell you so. Fall is also a fine time to install them — the cleaning that comes with a retrofit lands exactly when you'd want it anyway.

Doing it yourself vs. calling someone

A single-story ranch with walkable roof edges is a reasonable Saturday job: gloves, a bucket, and a hose to flush every downspout until it runs clear. Where we'd rather you call someone — us or anyone — is two-story work, steep-pitch rooflines, and anything involving leaning a ladder against the gutter itself, which bends aluminum and sends a surprising number of people to the ER every fall. A professional cleaning in Berks County runs $120-$250 for most homes, and ours includes a pitch-and-fastener check while we're up there.

Book in October for a November slot — the last two weeks of November fill first, and that's the window worth having.
